What Payroll Entails
Payroll is an essential function for any business. Employees must be paid the correct amount, at the right time, with the correct deductions. Failure to fulfil this expectation will result in unhappy and dissatisfied employees.
But, apart from keeping your employees happy, payroll also comes with statutory obligations and requirements, namely PAYE, UIF and SDL. SARS keeps a careful eye on these matters to ensure that the government also receives what is due to them.
In addition, your employees may have medical aid, pension and/or provident fund benefits and it is imperative that the correct amounts are deducted from their salaries and paid over to the relative parties concerned. These benefits also have implications for the tax amounts that need to be deducted from their salaries.
Then we have things such as garnishee orders, where the employer is required by law to deduct and pay over certain amounts from an employee’s salary, as ordered by the courts, in order to repay a debt that they owe.
Your employee may have a car/travel allowance or a company car. The taxes on such benefits also need to be determined correctly.
